our
new kitten has been trained to use the litter box before it leaves the
RaggleRock cattery. We use a kitten safe litter that is available at
any reputable pet store. You may also use wood pellets if you feel
inclined; however, do not use sand, dirt or sawdust. These will
quickly become wet and are not absorbent. Soon your house will be
smelly and the kitten will track the sand/sawdust all over the house.
 he
most important thing about the litter box, is its placement. Remember
to put it somewhere where your new kitten will be able to find it and
do not continuously move it on him. If you want to take the kitten to
bed with you at night, you may need a second litter box. After all, if
the first box is too far away accidents may happen. Kittens may hold
it as long as they can but once they have to make a run for the litter
box, you don't want them to be afraid to go all the way downstairs and
use your bedroom floor instead.
t is
recommended to keep the litter box on the main floor of the house. A
bathroom or a laundry room or even a back den would make the best
areas. If the litter box is in the basement, or in an obscure area, it
is too easy to forget about cleaning it. Also, if the litter box is in
the basement, by the time the smell reaches the main floor, it is
usually throughout the entire house.
 he
litter box should be cleaned on a daily basis and emptied fully at
least once a week. For this reason, some people choose to use less
litter in the box, and change if more frequently. If you use a
disinfectant to clean the litter box, please ensure that it is safe
for kittens and cats. Disinfectants that contain phenols and cresols
can be lethal to cats. They can absorb these substances through their
paw pads. So please be aware of products that you are using, both for
the litter box itself and in your bathrooms, kitchens etc. We suggest
chlorine based products or normal bleach that is watered down.
emember
that cats are very clean animals, and some cats will refuse to use the
litter box if it is not clean. The most common reason for litter box
mistakes are that the litter is dirty.
